Pray for Christ’s Church
Below are some prayers we invite members to use as you pray for members of our congregation. The first set of prayers are based on collects from the Book of Common Prayer while the second set are designed to help you with extemporaneous prayer. Feel free to use either or both as you pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ.
Daily Prayer Guide: Traditional Prayers
Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father: give______ grace to dedicate his/her freedom to your service, that they and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are worth nothing: send your Holy Spirit and pour into the heart of _____ that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever lives is counted dead before you. Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ's sake.
Merciful God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as pass our understanding: pour into the heart of _____ such love toward you that they, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that they can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Almighty Lord and everlasting God, we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern both the heart and body of _____ in the ways of your laws and the works of your commandments; that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever, they may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servant _____; and that they may obtain their petitions make them to ask such things as shall please you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself: help _____ to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be drawn to you; through him who was lifted up on the cross, and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: help _____ so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, they may embrace and forever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given them in our Savior Jesus Christ.
Daily Prayer Guide: Extemporaneous prayers
Pray that _____ will have sufficient funds to meet their daily needs. Pray that _____ will be generous in sharing with others and with the church out of what God provides for them. Pray that they will be thankful for all the blessings God has given them each day. Pray that they will have favor with their employers and with their co-workers and will enjoy the things God gives them to do to enable them to earn a living.
Pray for the health of _____ and for the wellbeing of everyone they love and care for. Pray that they will be free of pain and able to go about their daily tasks with a light heart. Pray that if they are taking medications, that the medicines will do the good intended and have no negative side effects. Pray that they will be mentally and emotionally sound and alert and be free from all fear, that they would experience the perfect love of God that casts out all fear.
Pray that _____ will have favor with all the people they deal with on a regular basis, that they will be kind and loving in all their personal and social relationships. Pray that they will have true friends to interact with and to share with. Pray that they will contribute to the peace of their neighborhood by praying for and sharing with their neighbors. Pray that any broken or strained family relationships will be mended and restored.
Pray that _____ will take time during each week to engage with others in some type of small group or friendship circle that discusses matters of faith and practice. Pray that they will read appropriate material that will increase their knowledge of the Kingdom of God. Pray that they will engage in outreach activities to those who do not yet have a personal relationship with Jesus. Pray that they will know how to share their faith and tell their personal story of salvation.
Friday, Personal Growth and Development:
Pray that _____ will continue to be interested in the world that surrounds them. That they will learn to play a musical instrument, be involved in a choral group, have an interesting hobby. Pray that they will engage in activities that contribute to their growth, development and general well-being.
Saturday, Leisure Activities:
Pray that _____ will be able to enjoy times of relaxation. Pray that they will have enjoyable hobbies or pastimes that they are able to engage in with friends and acquaintances. Pray that they will have the resources to eat out from time-to-time or to engage in whatever recreational activity they enjoy. Pray that they will understand what it means to enjoy a weekly Sabbath, setting aside required work chores and just enjoying life.
Pray that _____ will engage the Lord among His people in faithful worship. Pray that they will grow in faith and be true disciples of Jesus, learning and growing in their faith. Pray that they will be able to share their faith with others on a regular basis. Pray they will open their home to friends and acquaintances and to share their faith, making disciples of those they care about.
