Little Things

This past weekend I was able to spend some time in Avila with my wife’s side of the family. I love being able to spend time with them, especially in such a cooler climate compared to the Inland Empire.

One day during our vacation my wife, father-in-law, and sister-in-law visited a farm near the house we were all staying in. My sister-in-law brought her professional camera to take pictures of the surroundings there while I followed suit with my iPhone.

One of my favorite things to do when taking pictures is to focus in on a tiny detail. It can be something like a bee pollinating or a tiny wildflower that most would walk over in a field. No matter what, I like to get up close and notice the small, often unobserved details.

I think God likes to do the same thing with us. We’re so often caught up in the big picture of our lives and our person that we completely miss the little things. Sometimes the little thing is a sin that we long ago brushed off as inconsequential, but God helps us focus in on that so that we might root it out of our lives. Other times God provides us with a small word. It might be just a word or a short phrase, but just that little bit that we hear from God can feel enormous to us. Still other times it’s a small moment in between the business we often trudge through to offer to God a simple, small prayer of thanks or praise.

Our God is a huge, vast, enormous God. We ought to remember that. But, we also ought to remember that this God who can’t be contained by the universe reveals himself in our little moments and bodies. God is with us in the big and little things.
